Why Synonyms and Opposites Are Critical for 11+ Success
Of all the skills tested in the 11+ exam, the ability to recognise synonyms and opposites (antonyms) is among the most frequently examined. In GL Assessment verbal reasoning papers, dedicated synonym and antonym question types can account for a quarter or more of the total marks. In CEM papers, children must apply synonym knowledge when interpreting complex vocabulary in comprehension and cloze passages.
Beyond the direct question types, synonym and antonym knowledge underpins nearly every other verbal reasoning skill. A child who knows that obstinate means roughly the same as stubborn is far better placed to answer analogy questions, word-code tasks, and odd-one-out problems than one who has only learned isolated definitions.
This guide gives you everything you need: a clear explanation of how synonyms and opposites are tested, a comprehensive 50-word reference table, themed synonym groups, worked practice questions, and proven memory strategies. Key stat: In GL Assessment verbal reasoning, synonym and antonym questions can make up 20–30% of the total marks — making them one of the highest-value areas to target during preparation.
What Are Synonyms and Opposites in the 11+ Exam?
Understanding exactly what the exam is looking for is the first step to scoring well.
Synonyms
A synonym is a word that means the same thing — or nearly the same thing — as another word. Brave and courageous are synonyms. Large and enormous are synonyms. In 11+ papers, the question usually presents a word in bold and asks the child to select the closest meaning from four or five options. Partial matches are common traps: for example, happy and ecstatic are related but not equally matched for intensity.
Opposites / Antonyms
An antonym is a word with the opposite meaning. Generous and miserly are antonyms. Serene and agitated are antonyms. The 11+ exam typically presents a word and asks children to choose the best opposite, again from multiple options. The challenge is that many plausible-sounding options will be related but not truly opposite (e.g. cold is related to cool — not an antonym).
What Is Actually Tested?
Typical question formats include:
- Find the synonym: "Which word is closest in meaning to ARDENT?" (options: cool, passionate, cautious, bold, timid)
- Find the antonym: "Which word is most opposite in meaning to HUMBLE?" (options: modest, proud, clever, gentle, calm)
- Odd word out: "Find the word that does not belong: happy, joyful, elated, miserable, delighted"
- Word analogies: "GENEROUS is to MISERLY as BRAVE is to ___" (cowardly)
- Cloze passages: selecting the word that fits best in context, which requires synonym knowledge

How Synonyms and Antonyms Are Tested in 11+ Verbal Reasoning
Knowing the words is only half the battle — children also need to understand how the questions work so they can apply their knowledge efficiently under time pressure.
1. Find the Synonym
The most common format. A word is presented in capitals and the child must select the closest synonym from a list of five words.
Which word is closest in meaning to ARDENT?
A) cool B) passionate C) cautious D) bold E) timid
Answer: B) passionate
2. Find the Antonym
The child must identify the word most opposite in meaning to the given word.
Which word is most opposite in meaning to HUMBLE?
A) modest B) proud C) clever D) gentle E) calm
Answer: B) proud
3. Odd Word Out
The child identifies the word that does not belong to the synonym group of the other four.
Which word is the odd one out?
joyful elated cheerful miserable delighted
Answer: miserable (it is an antonym of the others)
4. Word Analogies
The child must understand a synonym or antonym relationship and apply it to a new pair.
GENEROUS is to MISERLY as BRAVE is to ___?
A) bold B) fearless C) cowardly D) daring E) valiant
Answer: C) cowardly (antonym relationship)
5. Cloze / Fill-in-the-Blank
Common in CEM papers. The child selects the word that fits best in a sentence, requiring understanding of synonyms to distinguish between similar-seeming options.
The explorer was ___ in her quest, refusing to give up despite setbacks.
A) timid B) lethargic C) resolute D) dubious E) aloof
Answer: C) resolute
Tips for Remembering Synonyms and Opposites
These five strategies are proven to accelerate synonym and antonym learning and make recall faster under exam pressure.
1. Learn in Synonym Clusters, Not Isolation
Instead of learning one word at a time, learn groups of synonyms together (e.g. all words meaning "brave"). This builds neural links between related words and makes them easier to retrieve under pressure. Use the synonym groups section above as your starting point.
2. Always Learn the Antonym at the Same Time
When you learn a new word, immediately learn its opposite. This doubles the value of every study session and makes antonym questions straightforward. If you know frugal means thrifty, then extravagant as the antonym is instantly memorable.
3. Use Mnemonic Devices and Word Stories
Create a short story or image that links a word to its meaning. For example, gregarious — think of someone at a party surrounded by a "GREat GROup" of friends. Stories and images are far more memorable than bare definitions and are especially effective for unusual vocabulary.
4. Use Spaced Repetition Flashcards
Review words at increasing intervals — today, then in two days, then a week, then a month. Spaced repetition is the single most effective method for long-term vocabulary retention, and it is built into the 11+ Vocab Master app. Mark words you find difficult so the app prioritises them in future sessions.
5. Test Actively, Not Passively
Reading a word list is passive — it feels like learning but retention is poor. Instead, cover the synonym column and try to recall it, or ask a parent to quiz you. Active retrieval practice consistently outperforms re-reading in research studies and is particularly important in the run-up to exams.
Combine all five strategies with the 11+ Vocab Master app for the best results. The app's six practice modes deliver active retrieval, spaced repetition, and themed synonym groups in one place.
